Signs Your Asphalt Roof Needs Replacement

Posted on

Unless they have water leaking from their ceilings, most people don't know what signs to look for to know if they need to replace their roof. Here are a few ways you can tell that your roof may need to be replaced before you have a catastrophic failure that lets water in your house.

  1. Bare spots on your roof. If you have missing shingles, there is a strong possibility that the rest of your shingles are in need of repair or replacement. Even if it was the result of a wind storm and not age-related deterioration, it is a good idea to have someone come out to inspect the rest of your roof and repair the areas that have been damaged. By taking some preventative care, you can extend the life of your roof and avoid the cost of fully re-roofing your home.
  2. Rocks and debris in your gutters. While asphalt shingles will naturally shed rocks over time, pay attention to how much debris is in your gutters. If you notice more rocks than usual, it could be a sign that your roof needs to be replaced.
  3. Curling shingles. If your shingles are curling, it means that the protective asphalt layer has been stripped away and the underlying structural material is warping. If your shingles are curling, you should immediately get in touch with a roofing company for repairs before things become so bad that the entire underlying structure has to be redone.
  4. Pieces of shingle in your gutters or yard. If you notice that you have torn pieces of shingle that have fallen off your roof, it is a sign that your roof should be repaired immediately. You may not be able to see any bald spots, but torn pieces of shingle are indicative of your entire roof deck needing repair. Cracks in one set of shingles mean that other shingles are already developing problems.
  5. The age of your roof. Like everything, roofs have a natural lifespan. Depending on who you ask, that lifespan can be 15 to 20 years. Once your roof is over 10 years old, do a quick visual inspection every year to check for any problems.

Due to the cost of re-roofing your house, it is easy to want to put it off. Nevertheless, if you proactively get problems taken care of, it can save you money in the long run, as roofers won't need to do as much work to your roof at any given point in time. It will also prevent damage to your attic and the rest of your home's structure. For more information, visit websites like
