3 Tips to Help Give Your Bathroom Grout a Makeover

Posted on

Updated kitchens and bathrooms can add value to a home. If you are thinking of remodeling your bathroom in the near future but you don't want to bear the expense of replacing your existing flooring or tile work, then giving your grout a makeover could be an affordable option.

Here are three tips you can use to give your grout a new look in the future.

1. Give dingy grout a good cleaning.

If your grout work is in good shape but just appears a bit dingy, you can easily clean it to create an elegant and updated look in your bathroom. All you need to complete this simple project is a nontoxic cleaning solution made from 7 cups water, one-half cup baking soda, one-third cup lemon juice, and one-fourth cup vinegar, plus a toothbrush and some elbow grease.

Apply the cleaning solution to your grout lines, using an old toothbrush to scrub away dirt and grime. Wipe up any excess solution with a clean cloth and enjoy your sparkling new grout lines.

2. Get rid of mold and mildew using cream of tartar.

Since your bathroom is exposed to moisture on a daily basis, it's not uncommon for your grout to form mold or mildew. Not only are these substances unsightly, but they can contribute to noxious odors in your bathroom as well.

You can rely on a couple of basic ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen to get rid of mold and mildew from your grout lines. All you need to do is combine cream of tartar with some vinegar to form a paste. This combination of ingredients will kill off any mold or mildew spores and bleach your grout to leave it looking whiter than ever.

3. Change the color of your grout using specialized dye.

Transforming your grout from plain white to whimsical gray or blue (or any other color you desire) can give your bathroom an entirely new appearance. You can easily swap the color of your grout using a specialized dye that can be purchased from your local hardware store.

Once you have thoroughly cleaned your grout lines, apply a small dot of dye in the center of a line and use a toothbrush to distribute the dye evenly. Allow 24 hours to dry, and your flooring or tile work will be completely transformed.

Remodeling your bathroom doesn't have to be difficult. Doing something as simple as giving your grout some TLC could help you achieve the updated look you desire. For further suggestions to update your bathroom, speak with a representative from a service like Patriot Construction.
