If you are going to get an automatic garage door installed at your house, there are some things that you can ask the installer for that will help to keep your house safer while still giving you the convenience of having a garage door that will open at the touch of a button.
One thing that you can do is to ask for a smaller remote for your garage door opener. A smaller remote will let you take it with you when you get out of the car since they can be small enough that they will fit on your keyring or in your pocket or purse. That way you don't have to worry about someone getting your garage door opener and managing to get into your house while you aren't home.
Padlock Your Garage
You don't have to padlock it all the time, just when you are going on vacation or going to be gone for a few days. What you are going to do is make sure that you padlock the throw latch. That latch will let you open your door if there is a power outage or some other problem that causes your garage door opener to not work. If there isn't a place to for you to put in a padlock, what you can do is to get some c-clamps from the hardware store or your local home improvement store. All you have to do is put one of those c-clamps on the tracks on each side of the door. When you tighten the clamps tight enough, they keep the door from opening if someone manages to throw the throw lock. When you put the clamps on, you may want to put them down pretty low on the tracks so that no one can open the garage door enough to slip under the door and get into your house that way. You will have to get into your house through the front door so that you can go into your garage and unlock the clamps, but it's worth it to keep anyone from getting into your garage.
If you are going to get an automatic garage door opener and a new garage door for your house because you want the ease and convenience, make sure that you are keeping your safety and security in your sights as well. It can be easy for you to get the convenience you want and the security you need.
